Let’s Be Real

By Ron Mullins and Thom Bolsch

Are you the type of person that watches action-adventure shows?

Do you ponder how you’d respond if you were the hero in those shows?

Have you thought about how you might react to having a gun pointed at you?

In today’s environment in select parts of the country, it is possible that you might find yourself in that exact situation.  Is your training on how to deal with such a situation based on what you see on those ‘Hollywood” shows?

First.  Let’s hope that none of us find ourselves in such a predicament!

However, in the off chance that you do find yourself in that situation; would you realistically be able to respond in a practiced, rational manner?

If you don’t train for it; you can’t act upon it!

While there is a lot of political debate on your right to self-protection, reality demands that you protect yourself and your family regardless of what is going on in the mind of your attacker.

And the only way you can be prepared and respond in a rational manner is to train to act in the situation.

How do you train to provide for the protection of your family, or innocent people around you?

Stepping into the lane of your local range, setting out your paper target at 20 yards, assuming the appropriate textbook stance, methodically establishing the correct grip and the ideal sight picture and slowly pulling the trigger for two rounds to hit the center of that target is NOT preparing for a real, violent, armed conflict!

The above is good training; but it is NOT how you deal with a “non-Hollywood” based altercation.

Let’s talk about what you must know to be able to realistically respond.

If it’s been a while since you’ve taken a handgun class; and a while is more than a year, then let’s get started with a refresher with Handgun Fundamentals.  Refresh those basic skills before moving on to more advanced coursework.

Next, sign up for a Defensive Shooting Fundamentals.  Still basic, but getting you prepared for the real world.

If you don’t have a License to Carry, take that class.  Yes, Texas is a Constitutional Carry state; but you learn that legal issue of carrying a firearm, it allows you to carry in most other states and should you end up in a shootout; having that license will be invaluable in dealing with the fall out.

Continuing your journey of preparation is Practice with a Purpose.  A program course to put you in the mindset to respond in a bad situation.  Developing that muscle memory that could possibly keep you alive.

And finally, while competitively based, League Matches provide a venue to incorporate what you have learned into a practical exercise, while having a little fun competition with friends.

The experience of live training prepares you both mentally and physically for the test of a lifetime.  Live training allows you to gauge the situation, assess the threat, and seek an effective and realistic response.

Remember, run away if you can; but if you can’t run, be mentally and physically prepared to respond, and react realistically.

So. if you haven’t been to the range to shoot in a while, grab your gun bag and come on in.  While here talk with the welcome desk about the various classes mentioned and sign up for your next course.
